OUR COUNSELORS

Our Counselors are trained through Grossmont's Psychology 199 Empathy Training Course. From this semester-long course counselors become active listeners, who do not judge, give advice, or probe. These qualities are essential for counselors to learn. Our goal is to provide a warm, confidential atmosphere for anyone who comes to see a counselor.

Hello there,

My name is Iris Gutierrez and I am the club president. This is my third year at Grossmont and let me say I've loved every second of it. I am a Psychology major in the hopes to one day become a licensed marriage counselor. I enjoy traveling, playing/ singing music, and meeting new people, so I encourage you to come and take hold of what we have to offer. See you soon!

I am here to listen.

Hi! My name is Rosa. I love watching television (Avatar: The Last Airbender and the Legend of Korra are my favorite series), reading YA fantasy and sci-fi books (too manny favorites to list!), and playing badminton. I am currently a psychology major at Grossmont, and I hope to transfer to UCSD next year. After taking Psychology 199-Empathy Training last semester, I am looking forward to being a peer counselor for my fellow students at Grossmont.

It is the client who knows what hurts, what directions to go, what problems are crucial, what experiences have been deeply buried.

It is impossible accurately to sense the perceptual world of another person and his world--unless you in some sense care.

Hello my name is Sam. I like many subjects within psychology, hence, I am a psychology major. Also, I am (one of many) student-to-student peer counselors.  I would gladly do a sort of quirky, and helpful, peer counselor thing (as a student) with anyone that would like to do so.

Come and talk to me, I'll listen.

I'm a second year psychology student with a desire to help others and see people at peace with themselves. I genuinely care about people and find that the best moments in my Life are when I'm connecting with others. When I'm not peer counseling for S2SPCC, I'm tutoring in the Math Study Center or writing. I'm available Tuesday mornings by appointment.

Listening is what I do best.

Hi. I like to listen to people. My goal is to make anyone who comes to me feel comfortable and secure with talking to me. Counseling has become my passion after being introduced to Empathy. Hopefully through our interaction, any problem you had is resolved or less of a burden. Feel free to contact me if you are needing someone to talk, or come by the Peer Counseling room in the library.

You have someone to confide in.

I am a disabled veteran (USMC) I served during OIF/OEF and I do understand how hard it is to talk to people about problems. I'm available if you need to talk.

I hope to see you soon!

My proper name is Osvaldo Ortega Jr, but most know me by Ozzy. For the most part, throughout my life I’ve been surrounded by a loving and supportive family along with a few very special friends that have always had my back. I consider myself to be very blessed to have the people I do in my life, because of them I’ve learned how to be the respectful, confident, and understanding student I am today; qualities that will contribute to reaching my goal of becoming a registered nurse. My family and friends taught me how offering a little love and an empathic ear to another person can send of a wave of positive vibes within one’s self and outwards to the world and that’s what I hope to accomplish in my adventures as a peer counselor.
